Gilbach Cologne

The listed Wilhelminian-era building, dating from 1910–1913, has been home to the Montessori Primary School since 1959 and is an integral part of the vibrant Belgian Quarter.

As part of a feasibility study and the subsequent design, a comprehensive restructuring of the premises is planned. Through this restructuring, the conversion of previously unused corridor areas into multifunctional spaces, and the redesign of the former access to the foyer, not only will the necessary space for operating a two-stream primary school be created. Rather, an inspiring and open learning environment will be established that particularly meets the principles of Montessori pedagogy.

A central component of the concept is the planned extension building in the inner courtyard.
This new building forms the heart and simultaneously the connection between the school and the gymnasium. It not only enables the establishment of the All-Day School (OGS) at the Gilbachstraße location, but also significantly enhances the entire school area.

The previously sealed and cramped schoolyard is transformed into a green oasis in the middle of the city through an innovative greening concept – developed in cooperation with the landscape architects from Lützow 7. A protected outdoor area with high amenity value is created. Diverse zones for experience, retreat, and gathering invite people to linger. Additionally, greened roof areas create attractive new break areas and places to stay.

During the renovation and expansion phase, a temporary relocation of school operations is necessary. The planned measures not only secure the continued existence of the school at the Gilbachstraße location, but also strengthen the structure and close networking of the school community in the district, which has grown over decades.
