Kleebachschule Aachen-Eilendorf
Project Description
Kleebachschule Aachen-Eilendorf Special Needs School
Architectural Concept:
The special needs school, focusing on intellectual development, has existed since 1970. In 2006, the existing school building from 1990 was extended with two “training apartments” on the open grounds directly adjacent to the school in the Eilendorf district. Situated protectively in a slight depression within the park landscape, and accompanied by the Kleebach stream, the building was deliberately conceived as an independent structure. It houses two identical apartments with a shared service core. This freestanding building, with its dedicated outdoor areas, small greenhouses, and private access from the public road, supports the learning objective of independent living and its associated daily routine. The house’s strictly geometric form suggests the intersection of two cuboids, which are intentionally colored to pleasantly contrast with the existing school building. The clearly structured interiors, achieved through the selection of natural and warm-toned materials, create a comfortable atmosphere that provides the essential foundation for the learning objective.
Educational Concept:
The “Living” teaching module is part of the concept for fostering personal development, with the goal of achieving the highest possible degree of independence and self-determination. The skills required for independent living, encompassing necessary tasks and the assessment of potential hazards, are to be imparted here.
