Litzgraben Community Primary School, Düsseldorf

Project Description

Friedrich Von Spee Community Primary School, Düsseldorf ‘Am Litzgraben’

The school building is located in a residential area in Düsseldorf-Angermund. The site is accessed via the public thoroughfare ‘Am Litzgraben’. The primary school is a freestanding building complex consisting of interconnected existing and new structures. In the two-story existing building with an undeveloped gable roof, constructed in the early sixties, the caretaker’s apartment is located in a side section, and various administrative, all-day care, and classrooms are in a main wing. Except for the caretaker’s apartment, the building has no basement. There are no sanitary facilities in the main wing. The main wing is accessed via a staircase that is not fire-separated from the corridors. It is planned to demolish the single-story building wing attached on the west side as part of the planned new construction measures and subsequently partially renovate the remaining structures. Due to the 100-year flood, the new building will have higher floor levels. To connect the buildings, the existing building will receive a floor elevation in the affected areas on the ground floor. The new building consists of a ground floor, an upper floor, and a technical attic floor. The central forum with a spacious gallery forms the focal point of the building complex. All rooms are located in the immediate vicinity of the forum. To carry out the entire construction project, the school will be relocated to a container facility with classrooms, administrative offices, all-day care rooms, a kitchen, and ancillary rooms. This temporary building will be constructed as a two-story facility using standardized container construction. After completion and commissioning of the school, the container facility will be completely dismantled, and the site will be largely de-sealed and restored. The new technical annex is intended for supplying the gymnasium, the temporary container facility, and the OGATA building, which will be demolished later.
