Jahnstraße School Complex Eschweiler

Project Description

The City Center School Complex comprises the Protestant Primary School (EGS) and the Comprehensive Secondary School (GHS). Both building sections, dating from the 1950s and 1970s, were successively extended, converted, and renovated in two construction phases. Concurrently, all building structures underwent a renovation of their entire building envelope. To ensure accessibility, an elevator was installed at the interface between both schools. The primary school building was partially deconstructed and supplemented with administrative offices and a cafeteria. A light-filled, two-story entrance hall, which also serves as a small forum for school events, forms the center connecting the renovated existing building (classroom wing) and the extension. Extensive excavations enable the use of the premises in the basement, where the OGS area with its own small outdoor spaces is located. In the secondary school building, generous excavations in the basement also allowed for the creation of OGS rooms. The reorganization of individual uses resulted in additional classrooms and an expansion of the science facilities. The central forum was provided with a spacious glass roof, allowing natural light. The outdoor areas received a new design in conjunction with the basement excavations.
