Gutenberg School Stolberg

Project Description

Gutenberg School LVR Special Education School for Language

The Gutenberg School project involves the new construction of a special education school, focusing on language, with three streams, a gymnasium, and a full-day facility including a cafeteria. Its significant hillside location (10 m elevation difference) allows for integration with the surroundings on three levels. The glass-enclosed forum opens up to the protected landscape area. With its curved classroom wing, the building harmoniously nestles into the slope; terraced levels and courtyards create engaging interior and exterior spaces. A sculpture designed by students lends a unique identity to the forecourt. Learning clusters are incorporated (six rooms and a central area form self-contained teaching units that serve as a ‘home’ for approximately 50 students). Facilities include a wood workshop, physics, chemistry, computer science labs, and a library featuring a ‘reading rotunda’. Natural building materials (brick, wood, precast concrete, and glass) define its aesthetic. The aim is for students and teachers to feel comfortable, thereby fostering a positive environment for learning.
