European School Bornheim
Project Description
The core building from the 1970s, with its extensions and additional stories, houses a 6-stream comprehensive school, accommodating approximately 1,500 people. The school’s character was gradually transformed from a technically oriented facility, largely artificially lit and ventilated, dating from the era of ‘technological optimism,’ into an atmospheric space dedicated to human well-being. Sunlight and plants (bananas, lemons, figs, and mandarins grow here within the building), natural ventilation, and positive learning conditions have been implemented here, alongside a renovation that saves technical, structural, fire protection, and operating costs. The school holds international significance, both in terms of its usage activities and its architectural character, and represents a very special pilot project for our office.
