Bornheim Indoor Leisure Pool

Project Description

Selected as a Reference Project for Exemplary Timber Construction in the European Timber Route (2008)

Brief:

As part of the renovation of the exterior shell, changing rooms, and various technical systems of the Bornheim indoor leisure pool (an existing structure from the 1970s, designed by architect van Dorp + Schmitt), an attractive toddler bathing area was to be built in an extension.

Architectural Concept:

The distinctive original building form was retained and is overlaid by the new, completely independent, inclined cylindrical form. The integration of old and new allows more and deeper penetrating daylight for the existing hall, so that both design languages and functions complement each other: a sense of security and expansive views; a building cube and an almost massless membrane between inside and outside. Timber components, greenery, and color serve as a sensual, contemporary addition to the existing pool, which has more the character of a sports facility, thereby creating a unique and diverse “feel-good atmosphere” overall.

Structural Concept:

Timber construction, also for reasons of building physics, with rod dimensions barely larger than window profiles for spans of 15 – 16 meters. Concealed system nodes with the Induo system or with special concrete base points and a central node.
