Alexander-von-Humboldt-Gymnasium, Bornheim

Project Description

Alexander-von-Humboldt-Gymnasium with a Three-Court Sports Hall in Bornheim

The new development was designed to provide a distinctive architectural definition for the previously undefined urban situation through the orthogonal, three-story corner building. The classroom building, gently curved towards the schoolyard and staggered over four stories, is connected to the adjacent three-court gymnasium by a single-story “joint building” (an open break hall). The internal passage through the amphitheater-forum can optionally create a short, interesting route between the town hall and Bonner Straße towards the indoor swimming pool. The main building volumes are thus compactly concentrated along Bonner Straße / corner Adenauerallee. The rear part of the property serves as an open space, experience area, and event space, and is only partially paved. A significant portion should remain natural but usable landscape, forming an important part of a green space network with existing open areas, such as those at the indoor leisure pool and along the Bornheim stream. The four-story curved building, oriented southwest, accommodates all classrooms, and on the ground floor, home economics, a student bistro, and administration. The three-story orthogonal northeast building houses all special rooms, including natural sciences, technology, the media library, art, and music. Between these two building volumes is a passage, a weather-protected outdoor area, which, in addition to its access and communication function, features an amphitheater-like forum with a small stage platform. This central area will be landscaped with a row of trees to enhance its street or square character. District-related extracurricular uses can also be effectively implemented here.
