Anita-Lichtenstein Comprehensive School Geilenkirchen

Project Description

The Anita-Lichtenstein Comprehensive School was established in the mid-1990s through the renovation and expansion of the Geilenkirchen secondary school. An extension was planned to meet the existing increased space requirements. For this purpose, the existing 3-story building section A in the southern part of the property was extended. The planned extension consistently continues the existing wing in its external contour and number of stories. The required space is accommodated on 3 levels. On the ground floor, an additional science room, a classroom, and two offices (department management) were located, along with the associated circulation area. The two upper floors each house 3 classrooms. Above the corridor on the third floor, in the ridge area of the pitched roof, the technical level of the existing building is continued. The necessary staircase, connecting all 3 levels, is arranged at the front. The external appearance of the extension adopts the design elements of the existing building. An interplay of exposed brickwork and light plastered facades, as well as floor-to-ceiling window elements, seamlessly integrates with the existing facades. Similarly, the pitched roof is continued as a timber construction with tile roofing. The escape staircase is designed as an outdoor space, solidly enclosed on three sides and covered by the continuation of the pitched roof. The southern facade of the staircase features a large-format tensioned stainless steel mesh, which on the one hand prevents unauthorized access and on the other hand ensures the necessary escape route via an integrated door.
