Kogelhäuserstraße Comprehensive School, Stolberg
Project Description
The Anita-Lichtenstein Comprehensive School was established in the mid-1990s through the renovation and expansion of the Geilenkirchen Comprehensive Secondary School. An extension building is planned to meet the existing increased space requirements. For this purpose, the existing 3-story building structure A in the southern part of the property will be extended. The planned extension building consistently continues the existing wing in its external contour and number of stories. The space requirements are accommodated on 3 levels. On the ground floor, another science room, a classroom, and two offices (department management) with their associated circulation area will be located. The two upper floors each house 3 classrooms. Above the corridor on the third floor, in the ridge area of the pitched roof, the technical level of the existing building will be continued. At the gable end, the required stairwell, which connects all 3 levels, will be arranged. The external appearance of the extension adopts the design elements of the existing building. An interplay of exposed brickwork, light rendered facades, and multi-story window elements seamlessly adapts to the existing facades. Likewise, the pitched roof will be continued as a timber construction with tile roofing. The stairwell of the escape staircase is designed as an outdoor space, massively enclosed on three sides, and covered by the continuation of the pitched roof. The southern facade of the stairwell forms a large-format tensioned stainless steel mesh, which on the one hand prevents unauthorized access and on the other hand ensures the necessary escape route via an integrated door. The existing fire department access from Josefstraße will be retained. The design of the outdoor facilities remains largely untouched. Only the areas affected by the construction of the extension building will receive a renewal of surfaces and planting.
