Municipal Community Primary School Driescher Hof Aachen
Project Description
The municipal community primary school was constructed in 1968 in the southeastern residential area “Driescher Hof”. School operations in the building, which included a gymnastics hall and a caretaker’s apartment, commenced in 1971. The addition of a gymnasium completed the school complex in 1981. The energy-efficient renovation of the school building encompassed the entire building envelope while simultaneously enhancing the overall appearance of the ensemble. Concurrently, hazardous substance remediation (PCB, KMF) was carried out. The uninsulated solid exterior wall components and single-glazed aluminum window elements were upgraded with an external thermal insulation composite system (ETICS) with a plastered finish, or with high-quality wood-aluminum window constructions featuring triple glazing. The fixed sun protection was replaced by a movable system with daylight and brightness control. The renovation of the flat roofs, some of which had already received thermal upgrades, was completed. Basement areas were insulated, and non-basement areas were fitted with perimeter insulation. The lighting was updated with energy-saving control systems. Classrooms and the gymnastics hall were equipped with decentralized, CO²-dependent controlled ventilation units with heat recovery. This ensured a significant reduction in consumption costs for heating and electrical energy, as well as consistently high indoor air quality.
